meddelanden och aktstycken
resolution to themselues; only they shewed that if any such treaties
were to bee taken in hand more publickely that they would bee
readyer to deale with the churches of greate brittaine then with any
others of the reformed: I desired them also seing all matters
concerning soe weighty a busynes could not bee spoken of in soe
larg[e] a meeting & of a suddayne to euery ones full satisfaction
that they would bee pleased to depute some to whom I might haue
a reference after the meeting should bee dissolued: this was taken
into consideracon & the next day 1 was appoynted to come agayne
in the morning to he[a]re the fynall resolution w:ch was deliuered
in fewe words by the L:d Archb[isho]p; tending to this effect: that
both my scope & my industrye in prosecuting of itt, was allowed
of by the assembly, that in due tyrne they would not bee wanting
for their part for prosecuting of it; & that if any fundamentali
confession of faith w:ch all sides might agree vnto, were offered to
them, that they would bee willinge to declare themselues concerning
itt. With this answere I was dismised; & before I went away 1
desired a Copie of the protocoll of our Conference w:ch the scribes
had made; w:ch was promised vnto mee, but afterward vpon better
consideration 1 was told by the lord Archbi[sho]p that it was to
bee giuen vp to the lords & not to bee divulged as being but a
priuate Conference.
A day or two after this was done: they made a relation of the
matter to the L:d Chanc: & some others of the Regents mett in
counsell with them, the substance of their answere to the lords was
that they could not come to any conclution with mee; because I
did keepe of[f] from particular matters; & because I was to bee
considered as a priuate man haueing no commission to treate in the
name of any state or church with them: this hath beene related to
mee first by the Queenes Tutor, a man that fauoureth this worke
Exceedingly: & now two dayes agoe also by the l:d Chanc: who
added that they had taken a Resolution to consider still further of
the worke & to Communicate with others of their brethren, as well
within as without the Kingdome aboute it. Moreover the Queenes
Tutor told mee: that in the meeting of the Regents with the Clergie,
it was determined, tha[t] an answer should bee giuen mee in write
in the Queenes name wherein their resolution concerning this matter
should bee deliuered; & when I spoke last with the L:d
Chancel-lour hee seemed to intimate some such matter telling mee that hee
would conferre with the rest of his Colleagues in my worke to know
their ioynt resolution in it: this is all that is done.
There is one Bishop (of Westerose) that is not fully gayned
to my busines of Pacification; hee is a singular man & popular
amongst the meaner Clergie but with the Cheifer sort in continuall
controuersies for on[e] thing or other a man fitt to fill others with
Jealousies & suspitions: if it had not beene for him I am allmost
