meddelanden och aktstycken
stances w:ch fall in, able to clogg the worke, for since my worke
hath been taken here to heart, and a good likinge towards it hath
beene shewed, it is fallen out that the rumours of my proceedings
here haue beene spread abroad in Germany amongst ye Lutheran
Churches makinge mention of mee as if I had brought all my
desires to a full period with this Church and state. There vpon
some euill willers to the cause being Jealous of the issue of this
negotiation haue bestirred themselues to disuade these that are here
from proceedinge, and haue complayned ouer this Church to others,
as if they wronged the rest of Lutherans in proceedinge soe farre
in soe great a worke without the consent of the rest; these
complaints of forrayners beinge certified here to some both of the
Clergie and state, will cause some slownes in their resolucons, for
I p[er]ceiue that besides the crosse nature of the B[isho]pp of
Westerose, of whom I haue written to you heretofore, that these
forrayne Jealousies haue stopped also the good inclynations and
resolucons w:ch were taken in priuate, before the matter was
agitated in the publique meetinge.
Nowe since the meeting[e] I find the B[isho]pp of Westerose
wholly settinge himselfe against the worke; the worldly ends w:ch
hee hath I will not relate, but sure it is that hee laboureth to
hinder all that hee can least a good opinion bee taken vp by the
Com[m]on sort of the Clergie of mee and of my worke and beinge
popular hee seeketh to effect by clamourousnesse (w:ch hee wakeneth
vp in some of the more ignorant sort) that which hee cannot doe
otherwise; hee is afraid that if the matter bee laid further to heart,
and if I bee thus p[er]mitted to proceed in a peaceable way, that
there will bee no auoydinge of the Conclusion in the end.
Therefore by any meanes hee hath laboured since the meetinge to wronge
mee and giue mee some distaste and by irritation to see if hee could
not get any aduantage of mee: but I hope all shall bee in vaine,
for his shame will shortly bee discouered vnto all men, and his
authority is much of låte fallen, neither is his opposition much
regarded, seeinge it is knowne, that hee hath a spirit of
Contra-diccon, and is alwayes opposite to these purposes, w:ch are most
liked by the Regents and the better sort of the Clergie; and indeed
this Intemperancie of his spirit breakinge forth now since the
meetinge is to mee no ill presage of the issue for I gather from hence,
that hee p[er]ceiueth the rest to bee serious and well affected and
therefore feareth that I shall attaine my purpose if I proceed further.
The Jealousies from abroad haue giuen him some aduantage to fly
out, and soe altogether will help to clogg the resolutions of the
Regents, neither am I able, as not being publiquely authorized, to
p[re]sse matters home in a formall way of treatye, nor am I willinge
to haue any Commission or to desire that a Commission should bee
giuen to any other, or that a rise should come from vs to make
