To William’ Laud
(Stockholm, 9 Sept. 1637.)

Most Reuerend Father in God,

Since the latter ende of July I haue not written; because then
I gaue a full account of a full period in my negotiation; & since,
a new businesse not wholly unforeseene hath openly discouered it
self; it is some attempt of opposition; arising from one of the
Clergie, whom since the very beginning I did discouer to bee auerse
more then any other from my purpose: but I would not haue thought
y:t euer hee would haue gone such a course as hee doth: for
without any cause or colour of cause hee sought a quarrell with me &
thought in making me angrie to gette perhaps some aduantage or
other, but y:t did faile him; for I suffered him to spend his passion
without giuing him any answer: since hee hath fallen to railing
■within his place of Residence & clamourously would make the world
beleeue y:t there is no possibilitie of agreement; & y:t the businesse
ought not to bee thought upon any more: for hee is afraid, y:t if
it come to a settled & orderly way of agitation, y:t Authoritie &
the better sort will carye it: the man is popular, but very boisterous
in passions; & hath continually beene in some contradiction or other
with his superiors: this maketh me feare him the lesse; Chiefly
because I know y:t hee will runne himself into inconveniencies &
straits by w:ch hee will bee ensnared. I haue requested the L:d
Chancelour to take up the matter betwixt me & him; or to lette
me deale with him alone, to cleare matters of obiection by write, &
to giue him satisfaction to all y:t hee can say; only y:t his course
of factiousnesse & railing to hinder the good inclinations wrought
in others, may bee stopped; whiles others take the matter positiuely
into consideration. How the L:d Chancelour will proceed in it I
know not as yet; hee is slow in all thinges, but I feare in this hee
will bee too slacke; for as the Clergie doth stand in awe of him,
so hee of them; & perhaps more then they of him: I am purposed
to putte the matter home; yet not suddenly or importunatly for I
must obserue more fully the way & the strenth of this opposition;
which is to me no euill presage of the effect; because from hence
I gather y:t hee hath discouered a realitie of others intentions to
my scope & way; & y:t hee feareth the issue; for if hee hadde no
such feare hee would neuer bestirre himself against it.

This will bind me to stay here; for except the L:d Chancelour
in ye name of the Regents will cutte him short, & interpose their
authoritie & giue me some other dispatch then can bee suddenly
hadde from the Clergie; I shall loose much ground in going away
before I haue cleared all matters throughly with him; therefore I

1 In the Durie Collection, House of Lords.
