westin, brev från john durie

of Vpsall should thinke me wholly dasht at the boisterous behaviour
of him of Westerose, I sent them a large write w:ch I received
from ye vniversity of Aberdein in Scotland tendinge to shewe the
agreement w:ch is betwixt vs and them in matters of controversie
hitherto debated soe farre as belongeth to the Fundamentalis of
Religion. This write hath kept them in action and now a while
agoe the Ueane of the facultie was here and brought me a short
answere wherein they mention (1 suppose least they should seeme
to yeld all at once too suddainly) some pettie matters to be further
explayned, takeinge some exception at certaine phrases and speaches
w:ch are in the sentence of those of Aberdein. I would have given
them ere nowe a larger explication of these phrases yf I did not
thinke good to deferre the matter of purpose, partly till I discover
whether or noe the B[isho]pp of Westerose be really quiet partly till
I see wherein I can make further vse of the Lord Chancelour, whoe
is somewhat Colder in his expressions to the worke then he was
wont to be, and partly least I should perhaps engage my selfe into
some needles schoole questions by reason of certaine phrases. I
will not make hast to give them an answere but intend to deferre it
till I see what further resolutions may fall in the reell prosecution
of the busines.
I finde that whiles the deane of the facultie of Diuinitie was
here that the busines was much thought vpon amongst them. For
the Lord Chancelour and the Queenes Præceptor have both vsed
different meanes to setle him in a right course to further the worke
more then he was inclyned because the B[isho]pp of Westerose
made him somewhat more vnwillinge then in former times I had
founde him. The Lord Chancelour did give him a Paræneticall write
w:ch I had received from the Clergie of Edenburg concerneinge my
worke to Copie out and to impart vnto others and the Queenes
Preceptor did in a kinde of publicke Conference at a Court Cleere
all the obiections and difficulties w:ch he proposed against the
possibilities of our agreem[en]t. Time must alsoe worke somethinge
in this worke; I know that my very beinge here although I doe
nothinge nowe, is a furtherance to ripen theire thoughts and a
vexation to the B[isho]pp of Westerose and a restraint to other
ray-linges w:ch I hope in time will weare quite away. Yf the Lord
Chancelour can bringe the Court Ecclesiasticall to passe, it is likely
that authority will be able to make peace in time to come, yf ye
Fundam[en]talis in doctrine were once confessedly agreed vpon: for
the pretext w:ch the B[isho]pp of Westerose vseth to cause the
worke seeme impossible and not to be thought vpon, is ye
im-putacon of a Fundamentall disagreement betwixt ye Religions.
Therefore all my thoughts have bene bent, and must still be sett to
overcome this Imputation, And to doe this really without wranglinge
