westin, brev från john durie 2 5 3

therefore would have me, to leave off, and not insist any longer vpon
the ground which I have gayned; But I must needs followe Sr
Tho[mas] his Councell, I must ride out the storme and make a faire
retrait which God willing will nowe be done at this meeting, for I
have already begunne to take my leave of the Lord Chancelor in
proposeing some demannds to him which before I goe from hence
should be answered, and which I suppose before the meeting be
past will not be answered. He would have me alsoe not only to
leave this place, but alsoe the workejj to come into Holland, where
perhaps he would make vse of me for his Children which I will
not refuse to doe, when all other shifts to proceed faile. But howe
will this be taken in England, and howe should I be able to trye
those of Denmark yf I should followe his purpose. Therefore seeing
his ayme is particuler, and mine is as it was at first, Therefore 1
am loath to sue to him for maintenance till our aymes concurre
againe, or till It please God to worke soe for me that I shall see
his feares to be without cause, and that I have done better in
staying then running away as he would have had me doeing, for
yf I had gone away as he would have had me doeing, I could
never have come backe againe hither without some expresse
Comis-sion. But nowe I hope to bring matters at least soe farre that
although noe full resolution be taken according to my present desire,
That Neverthe:s I shall have a free accesse to continue hereafter,
and come againe whensoever I shall thinke good, which by Gods
blessing may be for him a meanes to gaine his end by me in due
time. For in it I have obliged my selfe him alwaies with
subordination of it vnto my publick worke from which he is not averse, But
he is not pure in his thoughts of it, noe more then Mr. N: is nor
Mr. B: and noe body almost except your selfe and I and such as
looke to Religion and publique edificacon in it selfe and not to this
or that partie.

The Danish Agent hath promised to lett me knowe before I
goe away from hence, what acceptance I may expect from the Lo:
Chancelour Frise of Denmarke, And soe Consequently what effect I
may hope for in these quarters towards the publique State of the
Church. But as for my Lord Rosencrantz I count that a matter by
it selfe, For his ayme and mind in the way of opposeing schoole
Diuinitie will altogether I suppose Concurre, And I hope we shall
be helpefull otherwaies alsoe one to another when we are acquainted.

[John Durie].
