westin, brev från john durie
2 55
when all other Jealousies of State matters which Crosse me are
past, that his opposition will prove one of the greatest advantages
that could befall vnto my worke. Pray for me that this may come
to passe, excuse my silence towards others because I love not to
write of Combats & Coniectures and asist me with your wonted
favour.
[John Durie].
To [Samuel Harf lib].1
(Stockholm, 20 Jan. 1638.)
From the same Place and Date.
You see by these enclosed howe my busines doth stand and
what cause I had to write that Mr. B: put me vpon a hard taske,
when he Charged me with his Coinission to the Lord Chancelour.
But what doth he in the meane tyrne for you or me or for our
more vniversell aymes which cannot be disproved or refused by any
without manifest impietie and neglect of a spirituall dutie? Alas
even the best men are too particular and doe not knowe what the
Comon cause of Protestancie is and where the busines should be
vndertaken, but we must wait vpon god and see the yssue.
1 have printed some litle thinges in my worke partly to
vindicate my Credit and legitimation in soliciting the worke I am about,
partly to informe those of the Parliament nowe here present of the
substance of my treaties in this parte since my arivall, I have but
twoe hundreth Copies of each nor have I distributed any as yet
nor will I distribute any till I see it requisite hereafter. I will send
perhaps to you some Copies, but I am almost Careles of that which
may proceed from your quarters except God waken the spirits of
men more then hitherto hath bene done. I pray you salute Mr.
A: and tell him that the businesses of this printing and makeing
other thinges ready for the Parliament wherein the whole makeing
or marring of my Negotiation here will consist, hath takeing[!] me
quite off from continuing in the Analyticall discourse which I
be-ganne; yf it were Gods will that I could be againe out of these
straits and at some ease of Spirit to recollect my selfe I would
labour to satisfie all your desires. But I am as a man in a strange
Countrey beset on all sides full of feares to be betrayed of every
body without ioy or hope of assistance from any but from God
alone, And yet I cannot but proceed to trye the yssue that God
will give, Because I am sure that he is faithfull and will not leave
those that put theire tmst in him. I am weried with dayly inward
Combats within my selfe, soe that I faint vnder my thoughts and
wearysome meditating, and in the solitarines of my state for want
