»sweetness of inward knowledge», »sweetness of supernal
con-templation», »wondrous sweetness», »sweetness of inmost delight»,
»sweetness of eternal delight», »joy of a certain security», »joys
of quiet».1 Därmed torde det typiska för Gregorius’ mystiska
tillstånd vara angivet. Det förefaller mig även här, som om en
delvis ny kvalitet tillkomme: utom intensifieringen av det
vanliga religiösa innehållet synes detta på sätt och vis ha utvidgats
eller berikats.
En del ställen i den hel. Bernhards skrifter äro i vårt
sammanhang intressanta. Jag anför utdragen i BUTLERS
översättning.
»There are two kinds of transport (excessus) in holy
contempla-tion: the one in the intellect, the other in the heart (affectus); the
one in lig ht, the other in fervour; the one in discernment, the other
in devotion.»2
Härav framgår, att bilden av ljuset användes för att
utmärka vissheten, jfr ovan. Bernhard sysslar dock mest med den
sistnämnda arten. Så stor vikt han än lägger på »avkoppling» och
sådant3 stannar det positiva dock alltid i intressets medelpunkt,
och för honom är och förblir detta vad som rör känslan. Är
ljuset för honom som för de andra symbolen för deii
se?isibelt-intellektuella suggestionens realisering, är kärleken tecknet för
den emotionellt-volimtära suggestionens verk.
»But be most careful not to allow yourself to think that we
perceive anything corporeal or by way of images in this union (mingling,
’commixtio’) ... I go ön to express, in what words I am able,
the transport (excessus) of a puré soul unto God, or the loving
descent of God into the soul . . . That union (conjunctio), then, is made
in the spirit, because God is a spirit, and is moved with love for
the beauty of that soul which He may have seen to be Walking
ac-cording to the Spirit . . . Such a soul desires that by a special
privilege He should descend from ön high iiito her, and pervade her
wholly in the deepest affections, and to the very ground of the heart.
She desires that He . . . should be, as it were, inpoured into her . . .
