They were all delighted and eager to finish the
house at once. Mastro Nicola wanted to know
where the water for the fountains was to come
from.

Of course from Heaven where all the water on
the island came from. I intended besides to buy
the whole mountain of Barbarossa and build an
enormous cistern there for collecting the rain
water, and supply the whole village with water,
now so badly needed, it was the least I could do
for them to repay all their kindness to me. When
I drew the outlines of the little cloister with my
stick in the sand I saw it at once just as it stands
now, encircling with its graceful arcades its little
court of cypresses with the dancing fawn in its
