Preface



The poem that I now publish
was composed under strange
circumstances.

On midsummer night, 1899, I was
alone in the chapel at Bovigny Castle,
praying on the tomb of my husband
and eldest son, when I suddenly
heard a voice whisper: “Fetch pen
and paper.”

I obeyed. My hand drew
automatically a sun, and wrote the words
“Mot Ljuset” (“Towards the
Light”) without help of my personal
will. When I took the pen in my
hand, I had no idea about what I was
going to write, but nevertheless I
