Towards the Light _
I heard a broken sob, a feeble
wailing.
Who could it be? Who broke
the ghastly silence?
A living being ? If so — why-
came he here ?
It was a child, a small deserted
child.
Left here to perish in the winter
snow.
I felt compassion for the tiny
waif
Who softly sobbed himself to
sleep forever.
And anger ’gainst the mother
who could leave
