COMPUTER GRAPHICS

Computer graphics concerns the use of computers
and drafting machines, plotters, and high-speed
cat-hode-ray-tube displays for the manipulation and
presentation of digital data describing objects or ideas
formerly communicated by more traditional methods,
such as engineering drawings. Although Computer
graphics is still a relatively new field, it has already
demonstrated great potential as an aid in improving
design methods in engineering, architecture, naval
architecture, city and regional planning, plant layout
and design.

During the three days, lectures on specific topics
will be presented covering the field of Computer
graphics. Topics to be presented include Sketchpad,
General Motor’s DAC—I, industrial applications of
drafting machines and cathode-ray-tube terminals,
discussion of recent developments including data
structures, lowcost terminals, geometry of curyes and
surfaces, and graphics languages.

Each day a panel discussion is planned where the
conference attendees may engage in a dialog with
the lecturers. It is hoped that in this manner not
only will the general subject be covered, but also
specific problems of attendees may be discussed.
Tentatively, evening sessions are also planned for
the first two evenings for showing films or for the
purpose of further discussion.

PREREQUISITES

The participants should preferably have knowledge
of conventional Computer usage. However, individuals
who lack this knowledge, but have considerable
design experience and a firm interest in ways of
applying computers to their design problems, will
have a most valuable time at the seminar.

STAFF

The seminar staff is a group of researchers who have
made outstanding contributions to the field.

The principal instructor and coordinator for the
seminar will be Dr. B. Herzog of the Industrial
Engineering Department, College of Engineering, The
University of Michigan, formerly of Ford Motor
Company’s Engineering and Research Staff.

Other lecturers are:

S. H. Chasen, Research Laboratories, Lockheed —
Georgia Company.

Dr. W. R. Sutherland, Staff Member, M. I. T., Lincoln
Lab. Lexington, Mass.

In addition representatives from manufacturers of
computing machinery, appointed by Dr. Herzog, will
make presentations on specific topics.

LOCATION AND HOUSING

The seminar will be held at the excellent Røros
Turisthotell, located at Røros in «the heart öf
Nor-way», where a man can «hear his own thoughts» and
where facilities for superb evening sessions around
an open fire are available.

Rooms at the hotel will automatically be reserved at
receipt of registration.

TRANSPORTATION

Røros is served by Braathen’s airline from Oslo and
Trondheim, but only once a day. Train from
Trondheim to Røros takes 3 hours, departure 3 times a
day. Oslo—Røros by train takes opprox. 7 hours.

Number of seats on the flight between Oslo and
Røros is limited, but will possibly be enlarged if
an early overbooking is registrated. So, make your
reservations now.
