2. M. graffi, n. sp. (Zeiss AA. Oc. 2. Cam.-luc. Hæmatoxylin.) Trans/erse section of the muscular bulb, consisting of
radial, and annular, muscles. The latter form, with the former, a basket-work plaiting indicated, schematically, in the figure,
(vide, also, Pl. Ill), b. Exterior cuticle ot the muscular bulb; on the interior side, the muscular mass is separated by a
similar cuticle from the sensory oesophageal epithelium (o.e.), the subjacent muscles, and the oesophageal nerve (o.n.)
fi. Connective-tissue nuclei, a. Transsected dorsal ridge (the opposite ventral ridge is not lettered).

3. 31. giganteum, n sp. (Zeiss CC. Oc. 2. Cam.-luc. Osmic acid. Hæmatoxylin.) Horizonal section, through the ventral
portion of the p r obo s cis. fr. Transsected tentacular nerve-ring, from which nerves (n.) issue to the walls of the
proboscid-eal canal, tn., tn. Tentacular nerves, transsected at different points of their course, and seen passing, one on each side into
the tentacles. m.b. Section of a small ventral, anterior, portion of the muscular bulb.

4. 31. graffi, n. sp. (Zeiss CC. Oc. 2. Cam.-luc. Picro-carmine). Part of a longitudinal section, showing the origin of
an oesophageal nerve (on.)’, its root is composed of several branches (a.) whose fibres converge from both sides of the
tentacular nerve-ring (tr.). tn. Root of a few tentacular nerves. The oesophageal nerve (on.) is longitudinally divided by
a septum, n. Oesophageal nerve-branch, m.b. Muscles of the muscular bulb.

5. 31. giganteum, n. sp. (Zeiss F. Oc. 2. CamJuc-.) Horizonal section of a tentacle of the proboscis which receives a
tentacular nerve (tn.) that loosens itself out, into fibres, at the extremity of the tentacle. A few nuclei occur towards the
extremity (a) of the tentacle. b. Elongated nuclei. e. Epidermic cells of the outer side of the tentacle. (N.B. By a
printers error the indicative line has been run to the subjacent connective-tissue, e’. Inner epidermic cells.

6. 31. graffi, n. sp. (Zeiss F. Oc. 2. Cam.-luc. Picro-carmine.) Portion of a transverse section of the anterior proboscis.
tr. Tentacular nerve-ring. n.c., n.c. Nerve-cells, the latter communicating with the tentacular nerve-ring; some of the
cells are seen to be situated in vacuoli and, then, they are surrounded by an inner layer of connective-tissue (b.) whilst
the vacuoli themselves are surrounded by a separate outer layer (a.). Along the upper margin of the figure, the
probosc-ideal epithelium is seen; on the inner side af n.c’., a tentacular nerve-root is visible.

7. 31. graffi. n. sp. (Zeiss F. Oc. 2. Cam.-luc. and reduced to half size.) Portion of a horizontal section of the anterior
proboscis. tr. Tentacular nerve-ring, tn., tn". Tentacular nerve-roots, n. Nerve passing to the wall of the proboscideal
canal, n’. Part of an oesophageal nerve-root. n’. Nerve connecting the oesophageal and tentacular nerve-ring. nc.
Nerve-cell, in whose membrane nuclei are visible. Nerve-cells are frequently seen situated in vacuoli (a., a., a.) m. Muscles,
situated alongside the tentacular ring. e. Proboscideal epithelium, under which there is a dermal muscular layer (e.m.)
diminishing, gradually, towards the anterior extremity.

8. M. graffi, n. sp. (Seibert hom. im. ’/)<; Zeiss Oc. 1. Cam.-luc. and reduced to half size.) Horizontal section of the
sensory epithelium, of the proboscideal canal, o.n. Oesophageal nerve. I. Vacuolus. p., p’., p". Elongated epithelial
cells with grannular nuclei, and prolongations communicating with nervous fibrils. The nucleus in p". contains 2 nucleoli.
n.c. Canglionic cells, m. Muscles, cu. Cuticulum. a. The inner cuticular membrane of the muscular bulb. m. b.
Muscular-bulb muscles.

side of the posterior proboscis, o.n. An oesophageal nerve that relinquishes the oesophageal epithelium and doubles round
the posterior extremity of the muscular bulb; I have not been able to determine whether it is connected with the
oesophageal ring (o.r.) or not. n.c. Ganglionic cells, cm. Nerve connecting the oesophageal ring with the tentacular nerve-ring.
m.n. Nerves running from the oesophageal ring to the epithelium (m.e.) of the interior stomach, n.s. Nervus sympathicus (?)

17. 31. graffi, n. sp. (Zeiss CC. Oc. 2. Cam.-luc.) Portion of a horizontal section through one side of the posterior
proboscis. o.r. Transsected oesophageal ring; on the inner side of its neurelemma-sheath ganglionic cells (n.♂.) occur. At
the posterior extremity of the proboscis, much distant from the oesophageal ring, ganglionic cells (n.c.) are situated,
annularly, (vide nc. fig. 20) having their prolongations principally directed towards the oesophagus, n. Transsected nerve
originating in the oesophageal ring. 0. n. Oesophageal nerve doubling round the muscular bulb (m.b.). m.n. Nerve
passing to the epithelium of the anterior stomach.
