tender to the Board my heartfelt thankfulness
for the great honor it brings, as I understand the first
and only one hitherto given by the Institution. As I
have not meritedit, I willregard itrather as an
acknowledgement of the faithfulness by which the Swedish
Lutheran Ministers generally have been able to gather
so many of our country men and build up a synod as
large as our Augustana. For myself I must say, that
you must not expect of me to be an honor to your
growing Institution; all I can say is that I will continue
hereafter as heretofore, diligently to use my powers, in
my humble way, in promoting the cause of the Lord.
It is perhaps but natural that I should more than
before follow with deep interest the success of your College,
the name of which reminds. me of the close connection ’
wittnessed especially in 1748 between Swedish Ministers
of that time and him, who was the first that bore the
revered name ot Mählenberg in this country and laid
the foundation for the union of the Lutheran Church in
America, for the completion of which you and I will
exert ourselves to the utmost.

Hans engelska är väl icke så klassisk, men den visar
dock, att hjärtat satt på det rätta stället, och att han
emottog och bar sin teol. doktorstitel såsom en ära
ämnad åt sina landsmän och såsom en eggelse att ännu
trognare tjäna sin Herres sak. För honom var det
åtminstone ingen olycka att bära den hederstiteln, ty det
fanns något hos honom, som gaf den betydelse, men hos
de många, som sakna detta underlag, är det rent af en
olycka att blifva tillskapade till teol. doktorer,
förutsatt, att de hafva vanligt människovett, ty de måste
känna det som en parodi och såsom en narraktig lek
med hederligt folks känslor. Det är att hoppas, att
galenskapen är i nedgående inom våra lärdasamhällen.
