Every Christian nation, like each individual believer,
has received from God himself special gifts and a
special calling, and the nation especially equipped
leaders besides, for doing its part in the establishment and
extension of God’s kingdom. Thus He gave
Athanasius, that astute and subtle church father, to the
wisdom-loving Greeks; to the Romans, those champions
of law and an orderly government, He gave a stern and
judicious ecclesiastical leader in the person of
Augustine; and the peoples of northern Europe, protesting
against tyranny and falsehood, and striving for
freedom and truth, recognized in the bold but sensitive
and conscientious Martin Luther their God-given
leader and teacher and the Reformer of the Church.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden, which is
not an annex to the Prussian Evangelical Union, but a
sister church of genuine and faithful Lutheran churches,
also has its racial characteristics as part of the true
Church, namely, the heroic and earnest churchmanship
already conspicuous in the first and foremost of
Sweden’s church reformers, Olavus Petri. Him, therefore,
we have every reason to recall to memory, to study, and
to hold in high esteem.

We, the American Lutherans of Swedish stock, have
received, by the grace of God and through the medium
of the Church of Sweden, a most precious heritage from
the Swedish church reformer, Olavus Petri. It was he
