know in order to be saved.” The Scriptures are,
according to him, the fountain of divine truth as well as
of Christian life, “for of the Word of God is the life
of the believer, and the Word of God is the food of the
soul.” Olavus Petri learnt also from Luther’s teaching
and directly from his example that the people must
first be taught, before any reform of the superstitious
abuses in church ceremonies and institutions should be
undertaken. For we are told that in 1517 he had the
valuable privilege of accompanying Luther upon his
visitations to the Augustinian monasteries in Saxony
and Thuringia.
It was in the midst of stirring and trying times that
Olavus Petri pursued his studies at Wittenberg. In
that city, poorly equipped as it was in a sanitary way, a
plague broke out in the autumn of 1516, and during
its ravages Luther was constantly occupied with the
arduous and perilous task of administering aid and
comfort to the plague-stricken.
Shortly after this infliction, John Tetzel came to
the vicinity and began the peddling of indulgences to
replenish the exchequers of Pope Leo X. and
Archbishop Albrecht of Mainz. The Elector of Saxony,
however, would not tolerate this obnoxious traffic within
the borders of his domain. The impudent and indecent
pardon-monger plied his trade just beyond the Saxon
border, selling indulgences for the dead as well as the
