nothing daunted, from Augsburg on the anniversary of the
publishing of his theses, October 31, 1518. Thus
Olavus Petri had an opportunity to study Greek for
Master Philip Melanchthon, who came in August
of that year and assumed his chair four days after his
arrival, with a lecture which was highly prized by
Luther. His studies for the learned Melanchthon were
greatly to Olavus Petri’s advantage when later, with
the aid of the Latin translation by Erasmus and
Luther’s German version of 1522, he translated the
New Testament out of the original Greek and
published it anonymously in 1526, under the title: “The
New Testament in Swedish” (Thet Nyia Testamentit
på Swensko)
.

In November, 1518, Olavus Petri left Wittenberg,
arriving in Strängnäs the following month. There he
took a position as teacher in the cathedral school and
was made chancellor to Bishop Mattias Gregerson.
By him he was ordained a deacon in September, 1520.

A hawker of indulgences, named John Angelus
Arcimbold
, had carried on the nefarious traffic among
the Swedes in 1518, as had Tetzel among the Germans.
This had been allowed to pass unchallenged, owing in
part to the spiritual stupor and profound superstition of
the people, and in greater part to the war with
Denmark and the internal political conflicts which were
absorbing the public interest. The regent, Sten Sture
