renewing his order prohibiting the reading and
circulation of the writings of Luther and the Reformers, at the
risk of excommunication. He further requested that
a royal edict be issued against lending aid and comfort
to Luther’s followers. King Gustav replied that
Luther’s writings had not been refuted or condemned by
impartial judges, and that it was the duty of the king
to protect all his subjects from violence and arbitrary
interference with their rights.

Olavus Petri early in the year 1525 was joined in
wedlock to a pious maiden, named Christina, five years
older than himself. As a consecrated deacon he was
pledged to celibacy for life, hence this was a brave
reformatory step, in open defiance of the Roman Catholic
law of celibacy, an enactment responsible for untold
immorality and misery, and a curse to the Church.
When this reached the ears of the king, he summoned
Master Olov into his presence. The latter replied that
he was prepared to answer before a court of impartial
judges. When the information reached Brask, the irate
bishop wrote a sharp letter to the king, demanding that
so defiant an act be summarily punished, pointing out
that Olavus Petri must be put under the ban in
accordance with the law of the Church. This was King
Gustav’s trenchant answer to the bishop:

“To our limited understanding it seems peculiar that
a man should be banned for the sake of marriage, which
