however, and assure you that hereafter I will not treat
of these matters in this wise. The honor and vainglory
derived from blasphemous and scornful words I do not
covet." The subsequent rejoinder of Heliae was left
unanswered, and thenceforth Olavus Petri abandoned
polemics. Far from being a hot-headed and violent
apologist, he refrained more sedulously than any of the
other Church Reformers from bitter words and harsh
judgments of his adversaries.

The same year Olavus Petri published his
Coronation Sermon, (En Christelighen formaning till Sweriges
jnbyggiare, etc.), preached at the crowning of Gustav
Vasa as King of Sweden at Uppsala in January, 1528.
The text was fitly chosen from Deut. 17: 15—20:
"Thou shalt surely set him king over thee, whom
Jehovah thy God shall choose: one from among thy brethren
shalt thou set king over thee; thou mayest not put a
foreigner over thee, who is not thy brother," etc. He
earnestly admonished the subjects to give obedience to
their king, and cautioned the monarch, on the other
hand, to bear in mind that "he is set as a ruler, not over
his subjects, but over his own brethren, who are God’s
people."

Shortly afterward he published "A Christian
Admonition to the Clergy" (Een Christelighen formaning till
clerekrijt). With the words of Christ, "The good
shepherd giveth his life for the sheep," as a motto, he
