"The laity ought also to show that they cherish that
which is preached to them, so that they act accordingly;
and even though they may discover some shortcoming
on the part of the pastor of their parish (for all men
have their faults), let them not at once raise a hue and
cry about him, but suffer and tolerate him, admonishing
him as best they may and providing him with a decent
living, lest by his poverty he be made to worry over
such matters, which may hinder him in his
contemplation of the Word of God.
"But as the clergy have made particular note of such
passages of Scripture as favor them, setting all others
aside, so we now find the laymen laying especial stress
on those passages which may be construed to the injury
of the former; meanwhile they are little inclined to
observe those portions which speak against themselves.
Faults may be found on both sides. But if the clergy
begin to use the Word of God more faithfully, we may
hope that in time the condition of the laity will
improve, for we have the promise that the Word of God
shall bear fruit where it is rightly preached. May God
in His boundless mercy grant us grace to live in
harmony and love, one with another. Amen.

intent, and I hope my words will be so understood. If,
