them that they themselves are sinners, for God, who
alone has power to punish sin, forgives their sins and
looks upon them as good and righteous men. Sinners
alone oppose God and His commandments. Who is
there now to accuse man on account of his sins, when
He who was wroth condemns not, but rather justifies
(Rom. 8). We need not now fear our accusers; but
when sin and the devil would terrify us by pointing to
all our evil deeds, we can answer and say: ’Depart,
Satan! Thou hast no concern with these things.
Inasmuch as God, against whom I have trespassed, is
propitiated and has forgiven me all my transgressions, thou
hast nothing to do with this matter.’
"Christ, as we have said, is the one man who is
without sin and in whom is all righteounsess, yea, all sin
and unrighteousness disappears in Him, so that where
He is, there no sin can be found; He is that Lamb of
God, which taketh away the sins of the world. He
who has Him has with Him all righteousness and the
forgiveness of sins. But Him we can have only through
faith, and in order that we may have occasion and
opportunity to receive Him, the Word and the sacraments
have been given, whereby He is offered unto us. When
we receive the Word and the sacraments, putting our
faith and trust in them, then we have Christ; and
having Him, we have forgiveness and righteousness through
Him.
