Forekomst.

Oceurrenee. — Only one example of this species, a
fully developed male, was taken on the Expedition (2nd
cruise), north-west of Finmark (Ståt. 195), at a depth of
107 fathoms. The Station was located in the temperate
area; and the species cannot therefore, notwithstanding the
northern locality in which it occurred, with certainty be
regarded as an Arctic form.

Fam. Podoceridæ.

Geu. 1. Podocerns, Leach, 1815.

Linn. Transact. XI.

64. Podocerus assimilis, G. O. Sars, n. sp.

(PI. XVII, Pift. 1, a—e).
Podocerns eissimilis, G. O. Sars. Crust. & Pyenogonida nova etc., No. 36.

Artscharacteristik. — Legemet noget forlænget, med
de forreste Epimerer omtrent af Kroppens Hoide.
Hovedets Sidehjørner tilspidsede. 3die Bagkropssegments
Sideplader bagtil stumpt tilrundede. Øinene smaa, ovale, med
mørkt Pigment. Følerne kraftigt udviklede, over halvt saa
noget længere end Skaftets sidste Led, 8-leddet. 2det
Fodpar hos Hannen meget stort, med stærkt opsvulmet, aflang
oval Haand uden tydeligt begrændset Griberand, men bagtil
tæt besat med tildels cilierede Borster. De øvrige Fødder
af sædvanlig Bygning. Sidste Par Halefødder med forlænget
cylindrisk Stamme. Farven hvidagtig, med mørkere
Sliat-teringer. Længden 8""".

Findesteder. Ståt. 137, 280.

afrundede bagtil.

Beskrivelse. Legemet er (se PI. XVII, Fig. 1) noget
langstrakt, skjøndt idethele adskilligt robustere end hos dens
nærmeste Forvante P. megacheir Boeck.

Fam. Podoceridæ.

Gen. 1. lJo<locei-vus, Leach, 1815.

Linn. Transact. XI.

64. Podocerus assimilis. G. O. Sars, n. sp.

(PI. XVII, fig. 1. a—c).
Podocerus assimilis, G. O. Sars. Crust. & Pyenogonida nova etc., No. 3(1.

Specific Character.—Body somewhat elongate, with
anterior epimera about equal in height to body. Lateral
corners of head pointed. Lateral plates of 3rd abdominal
segment obtusely rounded posteriorly. Eyes small, oval,
with a dark pigment. Antennæ powerfully developed, more
than half the length of body, and posteriorly furnished
with long bristles in pectinate arrangement; 1st pair with
lst joint of peduncle as long as head, the 2 succeeding
joints of equal length, secondary flagellum very small,
scarcely more than one-third as long as 1st joint of
flagellum, and uni-articulate; 2nd pair with flagellum
somewhat longer than last joint of peduncle, eight-jointed.
Second pair of legs in male very large, with greatly swollen
oblongo-ovate hand, not exhibiting a distinctly defined
palmar margin, posteriorly however furnished with a dense
armature of in part ciliate bristles. Remaining legs of
usual structure. Last pair of caudal stylets with elongate,
cylindric stem. Colour whitish, with dark shadings. Length

Locality. — Stats. 137, 280.

Remarks. — This species approximates closest P. me~
gacheir Boeck, but differs from that animal in having a
somewhat robuster form of body, larger epimera, the
rudimentary character distinguishing the secondary flagellum of
its 1st pair of antennæ, as also in the lateral plates of
the 3rd abdominal segment not being angular, but obtusely
rounded posteriorly.

Description. — The body (see Pl. XVII, fig. 1) is
somewhat elongate, though on the whole a trifle more robust
than in its nearest related congener, P. megacheir Boeck.
