HISTORY
Fourteen thousand years ago the last inland ice
still covered the Scandinavian peninsula. Geolo-
gists are of opinion that Norway became inhabit-
able for Man c. 6000 B.C., but archeological
finds of bone and flint implements in coastal
districts suggest that Norway was inhabited
before that time. Stone Age discoveries dating
from c. 4000 B.C. have been made. From the Later
Stone Age we have a rich collection of discoveries
of implements and weapons, and c. 2000 B.C.
occupation had advanced to a stage showing the
nucleus of the first parish settlements. The Bronze
Age began to flourish in Norway c. 1500 B.C.,
and the Iron Age commenced c. 500 B.C. The first
authentic written record relating to Norway dates
from 330 B.C. In that year a Greek traveller,
Pytheas of Massila, visited Norway and has given
a trustworthy account of the country and its
people. From the days of the Roman Empire there
exist many interesting finds which show that
there was in those days a very lively intercourse
between Norway and the South. Tribal migrations
also exercised a great influence upon the people
