in the same year the number of teachers in town
elementary schools was 1141 men and 1872
women. In rural elementary schools the number
of pupils in that year was 307,485, and of teachers
5231 men and 2812 women.
Intermediate and Secondary Schools. The so-
called «middle» (intermediate) and gymnasium
(secondary) schools, which are not compulsory,
are based upon the seventh class of the element-
ary school. The <artium» (final examination of
the secondary school) gives entrance to the
university and the technical colleges. The period
of instruction is normally three years intermediate
and three years secondary. The intermediate and
secondary schools are State, Municipal, or private.
The private schools, which are constantly becom-
ing fewer in number, are based on school fees.
The others are supported primarily by govern-
ment or municipal grants. Some intermediary
schools give free education.
On completing his secondary education the
pupil may continue his training at the University,
the Agricultural College (of university rank), the
Trondheim Technical College (of university rank),
and at the two-years’ teaching colleges. (The
<artium» examination is not required for entrance
to the four-years’ teaching colleges).
For elementary school children who do not
continue in the intermediate school, but wish to
continue their education for a short period, there
are Continuation Schools of various kinds; and
