The dramas of Ibsen and Bjgrnson have their best
presentation in Norway, where the theatres and
the players still retain a strong impression of the
personal instruction of the dramatists themselves.
Of other Norwegian authors who have written
plays we may mention: Arne Garborg, Knut
Hamsun, Hans Aanerud, Vilhelm Krag, Hjalmar
Christensen, Peter Egge, Nils Kjeer, Johan Bojer,
Ronald Fangen, Helge Krog and Sigurd Christian-
sen.
The great names in Norwegian play-acting at
present are: Nationaltheatret: Mrs. Johanne Dyb-
wad, Mrs. Ragna Wettergreen, Halfdan Christen-
sen, Egil Eide, Mrs. Gerd Egede Nissen, Ingolf
Schanche, Hauk Aabel; Det nye teater: Harald
Stormoen, Mrs. Gyda Christensen, Thomas Tho-
massen; Det norske teater: Johan Hauge; Bergens
Nationale Scene: Mrs. Magda Blanc.
The Nationaltheatret in Oslo was opened in
1899. It is a continuation of the Christiania
Theater. Under the management of Bjgrn Bjgrnson
the Nationaltheatret achieved notable success in
the development of Norwegian dramatic art.
In Oslo there are now three permanent literary
theatres: Nationaltheatret, Det nye teater, and Det
norske teater. The last-named produces plays
written in the neo-Norwegian language, and has
gained a strong position as a good literary theatre.
A fourth permanent theatre, Folketeatret, is now
