THE NORWEGIAN FLAG After the dissolution of the union with Denmark and the conclusion of the union with Sweden in 1814, the Storting proceeded to discuss the question of a new national flag for Norway. In 1821 it was resolved that the Norwegian flag should consist of a blue cross bordered with white in a red field. In 1844 it was resolved to insert a union with the Swedish colours in the upper near canton. This union was removed from the maritime flag in 1898. The union was retained in the military and naval flag from 1844 until the dissolution of the Union with Sweden in 1905. The present national flag, and the military and naval flag, have the same colours, but the latter is swallow-tailed (see illustrations). The dimen- sions of the national flag are: Length 22, width 16. The width of the blue cross is two-sixteenths of the width of the flag. The width of the white edges of the cross are one-sixteenth of the width of the flag. 206
