PSYCHOLOGY AND THE CARE OF SOULS
of God. ‘I know no one,’ writes Scheirer, ‘who is more
anthropocentric than God Himself—my God, the God of the New
Testament revealed in Jesus Christ. He is pure love. Love
embraces everything. There is only one thing it excludes:
egocentricity.’
Scheirer is unquestionably right. His point of view in no way
contradicts those who maintain that to care for souls means to
succour them in the faith; indeed evangelical Christianity will
not remain true to itself if it forsakes this conception of the
spiritual adviser’s calling; but used to this end alone, the care
of souls has a restricted field of action. It can be of service only
to those who are already of our faith. Moreover, this care is
provided by the preaching of the Gospel. Clearly there should
be and must be a means by which help can be given by the
Christian pastor to any human being unconditionally.
Psychological care of souls is the means to that unrestricted ministry.
Neighbourly love is its motive and its Christian justification.
