METHODS OF TREATMENT
a wound. Complexes are constellations of ideas highly charged
with emotion that cannot be dissipated while they remain
inaccessible to consciousness; they are like unexploded bombs
hidden underground. They can be made to explode by bringing
them into consciousness. When a suppressed mental complex,
dangerous to the mental, emotional and physical life of a person,
is thus made manifest and dissipates its energy, often in an
emotional storm, it is said to have been ‘abreacted’. The
phenomenon is experienced as a liberation and its effect may
be to make a profoundly constructive change in a person’s
whole way of life.
