move and have our being. We are sinning against God; and
only some revelation of God having redemptive power can
save us from that: helping us, where we have no hope of
helping ourselves, to restore the broken relationship.
To sum up, then: there is a profound difference between the
consciousness of guilt and the fear of punishment that arise in
social relationships and the forms of guilt and fear that occur in
spiritual and personal relationships. This difference is not
always appreciated, and confusion of thought about it, usually
the result of faulty instruction, can produce in individuals many
aberrations of consciousness. Some of these we must now
describe and discuss.
