Q. If you had to carry him should it be on his back
or face?

A. On one side, or a little towards the face.
Q. Why?

A. Because if on his back the water could not run out.

Q. You have said nothing about artificial respiration. Is
it not important?

A. It is very important if the man have really ceased to
breathe, but if otherwise it is better to let it alone and simply
to watch.

Q. I should like to be sure that you know how to do it?

A. There are different methods. I should prefer the
Marshall Hall plan by simply changing the position of the body.

Q. Give me details?

A. I would turn the body face downwards, and gently
but firmly press the back for two seconds, then turn the body
upon one side, or a little beyond. The turnings should be
done ten or fifteen times in the minute by the watch.

Q. If your clothes caught fire what would you do?

A. Lie down.

Q. What next?

A. Wrap myself in a tablecloth, rug, carpet, or anything
woollen that was at hand.

Q. What would you avoid doing?

A. I would not go into the open air or into the "passage.

Q. If you saw a girl with her dress in flames what would
you do?

A. Throw her down and roll her up in the hearthrug.

Q. When you had put out the flames, supposing no doctor
be at hand, what would you do to the burns?

A. Cover them with treacle and wrap them up in
handkerchiefs or cotton wool.

Q. Is treacle the best application to a burn?

A. I am told that it is the very best, and it is always
at hand.

Af de synnerligen praktiska polyglottsamtalen meddela vi
följande:

Polyglot Conversations. No. 2.

treacle for burns and scalds.

M. Blanc. Ainsi vous recommandez la mélasse comme la
meilleure application pour une brûlure.

Mr. Smith. It is one of the best, and it has the advantage
of being always at hand.
