Ehuru föreliggande lilla arbete egentligen är en »abcbok»
efter ljudmetoden, erbjuder det dock ett och annat af intresse
för en svensk lärare. I fråga om det fonetiska
beteckningssystemet för engelskt uttal i läroböcker för ungdom uttalar sig
förf. på följande efterföljansvärda sätt: »It is the results of
phonetic investigation which are used, not the jargon or the
hieroglyphics of the phonetician». Sid. 29 säger förf : »There
is a distinct difference in the pronunciation of »was» in He
was seven years old and No, he wasn’t; and of »had» in Had
he seen hirn? and Yes, he had seen him many years ago». På
tal om uttrycket »the first two or the two first» i Malmstedts
uppsats i ett föregående häfte af tidskriften, så vilja vi anföra
följande ex. hos vår förf.: »The first thirty-six lessons, the first
six words, the two first sounds, the first five words, the first
four words, the first ten words, the first eig;ht words, the first
seven words, the first two words, the two last words, the last
three words, the . first eleven words, the first three words, the
first nine words.

Förf. till detta arbete är redan fördelaktigt känd genom
sina många läroböcker öfver engelska språket, bland hvilka vi
kunna nämna den större engelska grammatiken — »The
English Language: Its Grammar, History, and Literature — som
utgått i aderton upplagor (470 p.p. 4s. 6d.). Den engelska
tidningen »Daily Chronicle» för den 30 mars anmäler arbetet
och förordar det framför andra arbeten, som behandla hithörande
ämnen. Den engelska anmälaren inleder sin långa artikel med
följande ord: »The Art of writing English! One is inclined to
ask, Whose art of writing English? For there are so many
ways, and all are right, in the right hands. Keeping to prose,
