På tal om »The idiomatic Use of Prepositions» påpekar
förf., att man bör säga »the church is ornamented with the
statues of kings and queens», ej . . . by . . . Man kan säga
»he lives at Bath», men ej »at London».
Mot afdelningen »Precision in the Use of Synonyms» måste
vi göra samma anmärkning som mot våra egna svensk-engelska
synonymböcker (af Afzelius, Wennerberg etc.)*), nämligen att
förf:s framställning är alltför knapphändig och att den ej kan
sägas utgöra någon mönstergill eller pålitlig sådan af
betydelseskiftningar i det modärna språkbruket.
Bland praktiska vinkar å afdelningen »Letter-Writing»
påträffa vi följande: »The date is often put for shortness 2%/99
or 20—8—99.
»The Split Infinitive», som behandlas å afdelningen »Cautions
and Suggestions», skyr förf. som pästen och föreslår alla möjliga
om-skrifningar för att undgå densamma. »Avoid the split infinitive»,
säger förf. och fortsätter »it is to be hoped that both name and
thing will soon be forgotten. The split infinitive is a weed
which grows rankly in the garden of the journalist. Every
young writer should avoid it as he would the plague or shares
in a bubble company». Såsom prof på några af förf:s
beriktigande exempel vilja vi anföra: »To accurately give the facts
of the case» write »accurately to give ... or to g. a. . . .; »to
any longer play» write »to play any longer»; »to hastily despatch
a telegram» write »to despatch a telegram in haste», etc. I denna
afdelning behandlar förf. äfven »the position of the slippery
word only» och påpekar att »Our hero only fought for fame»
och »Our hero fought for fame only» äro liktydiga och att »only
at the end of the latter sentence gives it greater strength».
Å afdelningen »Divisions of Prose Style» anför förf. ett
beaktansvärdt uttalande af professor Earle **) om den engelska
periodiska pressen, som vi anse oss böra framhålla: »The focus
of English Prose is now to be sought in the periodical press.
Artides in newspapers are written by men of the highest
education, men of literary culture and of good social tone; their
writings are the most widely read of all that is written, and
they undoubtedly represent, in the broadest sense of the word,
the current standard of English Prose». — Här i denna af-
