= igelkott; bristle, prickle = tagg.)

Three little hedgehogs, who lived in a wood with their
parents, were very great friends. They used to go out together
and thought that they were quite able to take care of themselves.

One day, however, a sad event showed them that they were
not. While they were playing round an old tree, a fox suddenly
appeared. Very much frightened the poor little hedgehogs
started to run away; but the fox was much faster than they, and
so only two of them got home to teil the tale.

»How foolish to try and escape from a fox», said the old
hedgehog, their father. »Did n’t I tell you to roll yourselves up
into balls, with your bristles outside, when there was any
danger?»

The hedgehogs hung their heads, but at last one of them
said: »It is no good me doing that. I can’t make m y head and
tail meet.»

»Oh, that is only because you have not tried hard enough.
You must try again.»

So both little hedgehogs had to learn how to roll
themselves up into balls, and they soon became so elever, that if either
of them saw something that he was afraid of, he instantly
chan-ged into a ball of prickles, that no animal would want to have
anything to do with.
