Nareissus.

in bended knees he gazed into the fountain.
His only friend was night, who with compassion
Hcr sable mantlc wrapped about his form. —
Then blazed the cruel sun athwart the mountain,
Diselosing hollow cheeks and features ashen,
The dreadful ravages of passion1 s storm.
His bearing, erstwhile proud, was bent and chastened,
And through his veins a fiery fever hastened,
Drinking his blood and at his vitals eating,
While loud and frequent rang his cail: "Nareissus!"
"Nareissus!"
Persistent Echo from a far repeating.
In bitter mood he watched the sad mutation.
"’Tis not enough," he said, "that I must suffer!
Th’ environs share the sorrows of my heart.
Nareissus groans in every voice of nature,
His woe is felt by every living creature;
I love—nay, håle thee—I would from thee part
