COSMOPOLITISM v. NATIONALISM 53

Up to the present Russian politics presented themselves as
a hybrid and ever-vacillating combination of two extremes,
excluding each other. But there is reason to believe that
the future will bring about a compromise between these two
opposite currents of thought by a political programme
working for national self-respect and tolerance : the former
being destined to be a corrective for cosmopolitism, and the
latter for uncompromising nationalism.
