let it be remembered that it is something
alone to be a pioneer, to have
the mind, the initiative and the courage
to lead the way into unknown and
untried realms and ventures. In this
respect this son of a frontier immigrant
went far, in that while he had scarcely
any but Indian children for his playmates
in infancy he came to stand before kings.

Anderson’s tenure of some 13 or 14
years in the university fell largely
within the limits of the so-called Bascom
era, a period in the early history
of the university under the presidency
of Dr. John Bascom that has come
down with a legendary glamor because
of the severe, almost ascetic, intellectual
and moral atmosphere that pervaded
it and because of the great men
and women it produced,—an era indeed
of plain living and high thinking,
one that sent its graduates forth not
only highly equipped intellectually, but
inspired with zeal for and noble ideals
of public service.

All of this Prof. Anderson saw, no
little of it he was; he had his part in
the inspiration that animated graduating
classes at the time, and that he was
a forceful influence may be drawn from
the fact that from thence forward, to
the end of his life, he was known as
“Prof. Anderson.”

Of his associates in the more slender
faculty of his time one has come down
to us, the only survivor of that faculty
at the time of Anderson’s retirement
still in the active service of the university,
and it is a matter of pride to
us that he is a participant with us. in
today’s exercises, President Emeritus
Birge. With us also is Prof. Anderson’s
distinguished successor, Prof.
Julius E. Olson, and his successor in
turn, Prof. Einar Haugen, who have so
ably upheld and are upholding the
