“You are fond of travelling in pomp.
Better to let you start in state for your last
show, your last journey, to the sound of
merry chimes from all the ruined belfries of
Flanders and the bells of Rheims calling
France to Mass to offer thanks to God!
Better to let you go to hell with all the
honours due to your rank as the greatest
slayer of life, the greatest destroyer of
happiness the world has ever known!

made the sign of the Cross. His jaw closed,
his whole body grew rigid with a terrific
spasm, and the heart stood still.
