to work regularly and to confine himself within limits as to
expense . . . You are eminently qualified, in many respects, for such
a task. Whether you could bind yourself to the drudgery you
must look for ... I have little time to write, but will, be happy
to explain my ideas at large. . .»
Det är daterat »Thursday night», enligt Gillies 1826
»beginning of June», vilket ju kan vara minnesfel, och han förutskickar
den anmärkningen: »It was a letter intended to be shown as
indicating his notions what might be done even by a humble
supernumerary, in order to realize some permanent income».1 På detta
brev stöder sig givetvis en uppgift att tidskriften kom till på
initiativ av Walter Scott.
I Scotts’ dagbok förekommer emellertid Gillies’ namn varken i
maj eller juni. Den 6/i har haft besök av Gillies ■— »he is
writing a satire ...» 12/i har Scott sökt medla mellan Gillies och hans
onkel Lord Gillies. 2å/d antecknar han: »a long letter from E. P.
Gillies. I wonder how even he could ask me to announce myself
as the author of Annotations on German Novels which he is to
write.» (Förslaget var underligt, men inte enastående och Scott
själv hade låtit förstå att en av hans egna romaner var av Gillies.)
9/io, slutligen: ». . . A letter from Gillies menacing the world with
a foreign miscellany. The plan is a good one, but he ’canna haud
it’ as John Moodie says. He will think all is done when he has
got a set of names, and he will find the difficulty consists not in
that, but in getting articles ...» 10/io har han besvarat »a letter
from Gillies about establishing a foreign journal; a good plan, but
I fear in sorry hands. Of those he names as his assistants they
who can be useful will do little and the labours of those who are
willing to work will rather hold the publication down. I fear it
will not do.» Gillies refererar till detta brev i oktober och till
dess vänliga ton: »a good plot, a strong plot and — full of
expectation.»
Det förefaller åtminstone som Scott mindre tagit initiativ än
av sin godhet samtyckt att med försiktighet anbefalla ett av Gillies
framkastat förslag och han har gjort det av samma skäl, varmed
han i en dagboksanteckning 16/i2 1825 försvarar sitt erbjudande om
att Gillies skulle få bo på Chiefswood, därifrån hans måg Lockhart
