were curtailed to a minimum. With the slow but
steady improvement of business in America and
the depletion of inventories, the operations of the
factory have been correspondingly enlarged.
Philadelphia is the third-largest city in the
U. S. A., having 1,250,000 inhabitants. It is also
one of the oldest cities in the U. S. A. and is
the site of the first Swedish church to be built
in America. This was established about 1700
by a colony of Swedes who sailed up the
Delaware River in search of a new home and located
themselves a little distance outside of what was
then the City of Philadelphia. The city has in
the meantime so grown that this church, now
called the Old Swedes’ Church, is in the centre
of the old business section of the city.
SKF Industries Inc. has established a large
Research Laboratory adjacent to the Hess-Bright
plant. It has a staff of 20 people and is doing
research work of a character generally similar to
that done by the Gothenburg Laboratory.
The business in Canada is done by the
Canadian SKF Company Ltd. No bearings are
manufactured in Canada, the greater part of their sales
being imported from Sweden and the balance
from the U. S. A. The principal offices are
located in Toronto and Montreal, sales engineers
travelling over the various provinces of Canada
from these two offices.
SKF Industries Inc. has Branch Sales Offices
located in the following principal cities of the
U. S. A.: New York (N. Y.), New Haven (Conn.),
Boston (Mass.), Rochester (N. Y.), Buffalo (N. Y.),
Philadelphia (Pa.), Cleveland (Ohio), Pittsburg
(Pa.), Cincinnati (Ohio), Indianopolis (Ind.),
Chicago (111.), Charlotte (N. C.), Atlanta (Ga.), and
San Francisco (Cal.).
There are other Sales Engineers who cover
miscellaneous territories outside these Branch Offices.
The total outside selling force of S K F Industries
consists of approximately 40 sales engineers.
The Head Office at New York, in addition to
the management of the business and the factories,
handles all orders, invoices, credits, general
engineering and sales development. The office is
located at 165 Broadway, New York.
In closing, it may be interesting to know that
this office is situated on the twentyfifth floor of
one of New York’s largest buildings, the City
Investing Building. The office occupies a space
of about 12,000 square feet. From its windows
one may have an open view of the Bay of New
York, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, on
the South, of the Highlands of New Jersey and
the Hudson River on the West, of the East River
and the great suspension bridges crossing it on
the East, while finally to the North lies the greater
part of New York City.
A few blocks above us is the tallest building in
the world, the Woolworth Building, from whose
tower all our visitors from Sweden are sure at one
time or another to have a view quite unlike any
other in the world.
