telje Canal, past a swing bridge, into the Mälar Sea, the most
beautiful of Swedish Lakes. Smaller than Lakes Wener and
Wetter, it is more picturesquely studded with islets and broken
into bays. Tbere, too, are more life and greater wealth of
foliage. Notably the Scotch firs on the northern shores are
of large spread and rich in colour, the rocks, grown over with
swagnum moss, are bold and varied in hue and form, and
country houses are seen perched on every promontory and island.
On the shores of this lake are the castles of Gripsholm and
Skokloster and the palace of Drottningholm, all well worth
visit-ing, containing, -as they do, many treasures of interest to
anti-quarians and ordinary sightseers. Of these Gripsholm is the
most interesting and picturesque; and the central whitewashed
Church, covered with tiles, black from age, and quaint many
gabled buddings of the little village of Mariefred adjoining it
and the bay beneath, with leafy fringe of ash, elm and wdlow,
contrast pleasantly with the turreted castle.
On the eastern shores of Lake Mälar rises the capitai of
Sweden. It is difficult to do full justice to the beauty,
interest and charms of Stockholm. For those who desire a
conti-nous round of pleasurable excitements, I know no greater
pa-radise. Its museums, churches, palaces and gardens are all
of interest; but to me its greatest charms are the varying life
seen everywhere, the magnificent views at each tum, the noble
streets, the numerous bays and creeks with crowded boats plying
incessantly, and the forest, lake and sea stretching up to the
city all around. Then there are the evenings at the cafés
and music saloons which abound, for Stockholm is essentially
musical and the Swedes are a music loving and music
produ-cing race. After sundown, sailing over the waters, which
sur-round, and penetrate into the heart of the city, every scene
assumes a new aspect, lights tremble and gleam all around
and are reflected in long lines, the coloured lamps of the
Cafés tinge the breaking wavelets with blue and orange, the
favourite colours in Sweden, and music floats over the Sea
from the park Djurgården the Strömparterren, and the
Strömsborg.
