| G. Reimers Visby, which has preserved its medival character through half a millennium, is a microcosm of the contribution of the Gothlanders to cultural development in the North. Long before the birth of Christ, they carried on extensive foreign trade, and at the beginning of the Middle Ages the town of Visby grew up round the safe harbour on the west coast, and there colonies of foreign traders found their favourite settling-place. |
