reminds us of the assimilators in many Chordariaceae, and the
thallus is rather like Leathesia in structure, the star-shaped medul-
lary cells also occurring in Splachnidium. It is true that the
mature structure is similar to the structure of Fucus, but the mode
of growth is entirely distinct.
The apical cell.
This mysterious body has been described by MITCHELL and
WHITTING and was especially studied by Ror. In the young api-

cal zone we find a varying number of pear-shaped bodies, pro
longed into a narrow tail which is stuck belween the normal
cells and generally reaches the cavity below the corlex. They
show no conneclion at all with other cells and differ from them
not only in shape but also by the very thick cell wall. They do
not take part in the formation of tissue. They are also found in
the conceplacles. According to MITCHELL and WHITTING the appear -
