APPENDIX.
Details of the most important experiments are given below. In
order to save space, the results have been combined in a single
average figure in certain places where several experiments were
undertaken under similar conditions. Further, in two or three places
in Tables VII and XI a reduction of the result to average light-
intensity has been carried out. The average concentration of the
carbon dioxide in the assimilation-chamber has been calculated
from the initial and final values. In the correction of the values
in Tables I, IV, VIII, IX, and X to a CO, percentage of 1.70 mg.
per 3 litres (0.57 mg. per litre) it has been assumed that direct pro-
portionality prevails between assimilation and CO, concentration.
In the correction of the values to a temperature of 18° I have used
the coefficient 1.35 derived from the curve of MATTHAEI (1905),
which has been found to agree quite well with my results.
