ceae." SEWARD considers Sciadopitys to be the only representative
of a separate family, Sciadopitineae, equivalent to Abietineae, Arauca-
rineae, Taxineae etc.

From the paleobotanical side only a few contributions of value
to the knowledge of the geological history and the phylogeny of
Sciadopitys have hitherto been published. The first unquestionable
discovery of fossil Sciadopitys is made by MENzeEL (1913) in the

tertiary formation of western Germany. HALLE (1915) has descri-
bed some coniferous leaves of cretaceous age from Greenland as
Sciadopitytes. This genus was instituted by GOEPPERT many years
ago for some forms from the tertiary formation of Samland, the
real nature of which has hitherto remained obscure. I have re-
cently tried to find the type specimens of the two species of
GOEPPERT but have not been successful. HarrE has given the fol-
lowing diagnosis of Sciadopitytes:

“Linear leaves of Conifer-like habit, with a dorsal median groove
which is protected by elongated papillae and whose epidermal
tissue differs from that of the rest of the leaf through a non-seriate
arrangement of the cells and the occurrence of stomata.“
