eretaceous. Then a parallel decrease in the number of’species in
both families may be observed. It should be noticed that Scia-
dopitys or Sciadopitytes are most frequently found together with
Ginkgo not only in mesozoic but also in tertiary deposits (Sciado-
pitys tertiaria and Ginkgo adiantoides in the upper pliocene of
western Germany). At the present time Sciadopilys as well as Ginkgo
is an asiatic type of gymnosperms. We thus find a remarkable
analogy between the two groups in question.

Further it is of interest to compare the geological history of
Sciadopitys with that of the other Taxodineae. As far as we now
know most of the latter first appear in the lower cretaceous, when
the Sciadopitineae had probably already reached their culmination.
Even in this respect Sciadopitys occupies an isolated position within
the Taxodineae.

cial family, Sciadopilineae, seems to be verified

In this connection some words of VELENOVSKY ought to be cited here:

“Die Gattung Sciadopitys darf nach allen ihren vegetativen und
Blütenteilen überhaupt mit keiner der früher genannten Familien
(incl. Taxodineae) verbunden werden. Es ist dies ein isolierter
Koniferentypus, ohne nähere Verwandtschaft und höchst wahr-
scheinlich aus uralten geologischen Zeiten herübergekommen.“

Fossil remains of Sciadopitys had not yet been discovered at the
time when VELENOVSKY wrote these lines.

In a following work dealing with the geological history of the
Taxodineae, Araucarineae etc., I propose to give a detailed descrip-
tion of the above-mentioned species and to discuss the problem
of the phylogeny of Sciadopitys.
