below.) The sodium being wholly excluded, CaCl,.6 H,O was given
in the same amount as in the solutions corresponding to Ihe
ratios I, II, IV, V and VI of the first experiment, in each of these
cultures 10 parallel 600 cc. glass jars were used with one plant
in each in paralfined corks. The culture was made in an airy
roof-greenhouse, the continuous renewal, the acidity of the solution,
the amount of phosphates, magnesiumsulphate and saltpeter, (pure
chemicals from British Drughouses Ltd.), being the same. The seeds
were sown in saw-dust on the 11th of June (the seeds, being of
more heterogenous material than those of the first experiment, were
graded between 0.01—0.05 gr.), the seedlings were planted on the
20th, the continuous renewal of solution was begun on the 5th of
July, and finally the plants harvested on the 20th of August. The
lurgescence of the plants was remarkably low also this year, again
probably due to the physiological disease referred to above and
further discussed below. The stunted condition of the roots re-
ferred to above appeared in VI and VII. Instead of direct aeration
the holes in the corks were large enough to allow the free sur-
face of the solution to come into contact with the open air, a
method commonly used in the Botanical Department of Rothamsted
Experimental Station. — The results are given in Table I and II,
and the figures 1—6.
