that the toxicity of 4 gr./l. sol. NaCl was counteracted by 0.030
gr./l. sol. CaO, the dry-weight of one lot of 100 seedlings grown
in 8 days in this mixture being 1.18 times that of the correspond-
ing dry-weight of 100 plants grown in the pure NaCl-solution.
The dry-weight of another lot of 100 seedlings grown in 10 days
in the same mixture was only 1.04 times that of the corresponding
dry-weight for the pure solution. Chemical analyses of the dry-
substance were made showing, firstly, a 1.32 times as high ash-
content for one lot of 100 seedlings grown in the mixture for 10
days as that of a corresponding lot grown in the pure solution;
secondly 1.08 limes the amount of sodium in the ash of the seed-

lings, grown in the mixture, to that found in the culture from

the pure solution and 5 times the quantity of Ca. The second
experiment related to seedlings grown for 16 days in solutions,
made up by using 0.004 mol NaCl and CaÜl,-solution as a basis

in 6 different ratios. In table III, the results of this experiment

are given (Table II, |. c. 1918 [21]) from which REED concludes
that 98:2 was a favourable ratio for the seedlings, the differences

between the plants in solutions 4 to 6 being disregarded in rela-

tion to the experimental error, which has not been given in the
paper. As this latter is the case, we cannot judge, whether the

conclusions are permissible or not, though the difference between
the dry-weight of 2 and that of 3 and 4 for example does not
seem to be of a very great importance. But if there really is a
systematical difference between the points, it may be explained
on the assumption of an antagonistic function co-operating with a
nutritive one, and it seems not very probable that calcium chlo-
