Summary.
1. ÖSTERHOUT’S conelusion that the antagonistic functions of
salts are not exercised in dilute solutions, was discussed. The in-
vestigations, om which this conclusion was based, may as well
point lo a combined exercise of nutritive and antagonistic functions.
2. Two experiments have been described, one, in which the ratio
Ca:Na was varied, the sum being kept constant, another, in which
sodium was excluded and the amount of Ca varied in the same
way as in the first. The degree of reliability of the production
curves and the possibility of a comparison between the two cur-
ves was considered. The comparison supported the assumption of
combined effects.
3. The investigations of REED and others were discussed. The
resulls of these investigations do not contradict the hypothesis of
combined action, though they do not give any safe support for
this hypothesis.
4. It was found to be very unsafe to carry the conclusions
further, regarding the effect of the antagonistic action in the ex-
periments, as our knowledge about the co-operation of two pro-
duction factors is very vague. A suggestion for a possible method
of reaching conclusions concerning the general aspect of the an-
tagonism curve was given.
The author was given facilities for carrying out the first part
of this investigation in the laboratories of Fysikaliskt-Kemiska
Nobelinstitulet, Stockholm, by the courtesy of its Director, Pro-
fessor SvANTE ÄRRHENIUS, for which the author is greatly indebted
to him. — The second part of the investigation was carried out
at Rothamsted Experimental Station, where space in a green-house
was placed at the author’s disposal by request of the Swedish
Legation in London. For the great kindness shown to the author
during his stay in Rothamsted by its Director, Sir Joun Russert
and by members of the laboratory staff, he wishes to express his
very great appreciation. — It is finally a pleasure to the author
to acknowledge his indebtedness to Doctor O. ÅRRHENIUS, who
firstly called his attention to the problems of antagonism, and
secondly gave him helpful and ready advice throughout the course
of the investigation,
