represented by the ash obtained on combustion is remarkably small.
They form an emulsion with water, which is of advantadge in certain
cases, and are without action on metallic surfaces.

As already stated I have examined a large number of samples
prepared by D:r EJceriberg, but I have made experiments chiefly with
two typical samples, which furnished the following results on being tested:
A. Soliäified oü for high speeds and lo%v pressures.

This may be described as soft, buth nevertheless it had the high
melting point of 244° F.

The flashing point determined by the close test was 386° F.

The loss on exposure to a temperature of 220° F. for 21/2 hours
was 0.32 %.

The ash amounted to O.59 %.

B. Solidified oü for lower speeds and higher pressures.

This was hårder than A., and the melting point was slightly higher,
viz. 266° F.

The flashing point determined by the close test was 390° F.

The loss on exposure to a temperature of 220° F. for 2XI2 hours
was 0.48 %.

The ash amounted to I.29 %.

Note. The melting point recorded was the temperature at which
one gramme of the material heated at the råte of 10° C. per minute
in a shallow metallic capsule, with an orifice 3 m.m. in diameter in
the centre, became sufficiently fluid to pass through the orifice in dröps.

Having regard to the physical and chemical nature of the products
described in this report, I am decidedly of opinion that D:r Ekenberg’s
solidified mineral oiis will be found in practice to be of exceptionally
high value as lubricating agents. It will be dear from what I have
stated that they possess in many important particulars marked
superior-ity över thickened or solidified oiis of the usual character, and I am
confident that they will pröve to be effective and economical in every
instance in which they are intelligently employed.

In respect to the question of the cost of manufacture I have
only to add that the ingredients are inexpensive and the process simple.
