population of different läns.
107
To the mining-districts of Central Sweden there was, in the sixteenth and
seventeenth centuries, a not unimportant immigration of Finns, who have,
however, now quite coalesced with the Swedish population. The same state
of things holds for the colony of Walloons brought in, during the seventeenth
century, to the iron-works round Dannemora.
Population of different läns.
From an historical point of view, Sweden is divided into 25 provinces,
the names and boundaries of which are indicated on the map, p. 3. But.
from an administrative point of view, the division is into 25 districts,
called lans, cf. map, p. 108. The areas of the läns and their populations
at the end of 1751, 1865, 1913 are given in Table 8.

1 Approximating to the present division, and with rough emendations for Stockholm and
Blekinge. — According to more recent calculations by G. Sundbärg (see Report on
Emigration, supplement 4, table 39) the population in 1751 may be assumed at 1802132, of which
about 16 200 should be assigned to the län of Norrbotten, excluding the portion ceded in
1809 to Russia. — 2 At the time when the increased emigration began. — 3 In central
Sweden, viz. Lakes Vänern, Vättern, Mälaren, and Hjälmaren. — 1 Figures supplied by the
Central Bureau of Statistics. Some slight differences from the figures in Table 1, Part I,
supplied by the Ordnance Survey (owing to different methods of calculation employd) are of
no significance.
