at a time. During their term of service the majority of "volunteers" pass
through military schools for corporals or non-commissioned officers, or are
trained as ambulance workers, armourers, farriers, or other craftsmen. The
greater number of permanent soldiers are promoted to the different ranks
of corporal1.
Non-commissioned officers (underofficer) are recruited out of the
p e r manent body of soldiers. To be eligible as a non-commissioned
officer, one must have passed through a school for non-commissioned
officers with credit, and to have served several years as
quartermaster-ser-geant with distinction.

Cavalry Charge over a Frozen Lake.
Officers. To be eligible as an officersvolontiir, or cadet, one must have
passed the studentexamen, or University Matriculation Examination
(generally passed while still at school: rather severe). Having undergone
training as recruits, cadets are trained at a school for non-commissioned
officers, and enter for their second year of training at the Military School,
where they stay about 14 months. The training of an officer takes about
23/2 years after passing the studentexamen. The average age at which the
rank of officer is attained is from 21 to 22. About 100 officers are
gazetted annually. Promotion up to the rank of captain is, as a rule, by
length of service in the regiment, promotion to that of major or higher
ranks by selection from within the particular arm of service or 1 lie
General Staff.
To be eligible for promotion to the rank of lieutenant in the cavalry in time of
peace, it. is necessary to have served for two years and to have gone through a one
